Insight on Portugal – The year of the Captains / Insight Team of the Sunday Times

This work analyzes the Portuguese Revolution of 25 April 1974 and the turbulent period that followed. It examines the Carnation Revolution and the subsequent political upheaval in Portugal, highlighting the role of the Armed Forces Movement (MFA), known as the “Captains of April,” in overthrowing the Estado Novo dictatorship. It also addresses the collapse of Marcelo Caetano’s regime, the end of nearly 50 years of authoritarian rule, and the struggles among different political factions — communists, socialists, and conservatives — during the revolutionary transition. In addition, the book explains the social and economic challenges Portugal faced, including decolonization in Africa and internal instability.

Este trabalho apresenta uma visão estrangeira sobre o 25 de Abril de 1974 e o período turbulento que se lhe seguiu. Examina a Revolução dos Cravos e a subsequente agitação política no país, destacando o papel do Movimento das Forças Armadas (MFA), conhecido como os “Capitães de Abril”, na queda da ditadura do Estado Novo. Aborda também o colapso do regime de Marcelo Caetano, o fim de quase 50 anos de governo autoritário e as lutas entre diferentes facções políticas — comunistas, socialistas, sociais-democratas e centristas  — durante a transição revolucionária. Além disso, o livro explica os desafios sociais e económicos que Portugal enfrentou, incluindo a descolonização em África e a instabilidade interna.
